[Edit] ProDebating is the only way to come to a well informed decision. |
[Edit] ConIt is very rare that debating will produce a well informed decision. Those who debate will often lie or bend the opponents points to make their points look better. They will sometimes make up facts in order to deceive others and attempt to pass them as the truth. Well informed decisions can be achieved through other methods, namely research. When searching how to make well informed decisions, almost all of the answers involve researching. Almost always, there is many more opinions then there is evidence and it ultimately comes down to someone making a decisions, not discussing it. |

[Edit] [ ]Affirmative Points and Rebuts
[Edit] ProDebating encourages youth, audiences and debaters to expand upon subjects and think about issues in different ways. Increases mental stimulation and is a way for people to systematically solve problems.
[Edit] ConIt also would encourage lying in an attempt to prove or create their case. In looking at the issue in a different way the debaters could waste time and bicker as in almost every issue there is an infinite amount of ways to look at it and this in itself can easily create many smaller debates which achieve nothing. The debate itself may not achieve anything at all and could waste time which could be spent making decisions rather than just talking about them

[Edit] [ ]Affirmative Points and Rebuts.
[Edit] ProDebating can lead to a flourishing society by making allowing both sides of the arguments be presented before a decision is made. |
[Edit] ConIn parliament the outcome of the debate is preditermined by the majority and is really a sham. Also if the majority of the lower house is the Coalition and the majority of the upper house is Labor and the bill goes against Labors policies chances are the bill will never be passed. A party presents the bill because they want it to be passed and the debate that follows is of no consequence because people vote along party lines. Therefore it is not debating that fairly presents both sides of an argument and is not essential for social development.

[Edit] [ ]Affirmative Points and Rebuts
[Edit] ProDebating encourages people to develop socially and benefits social development in such a way that makes it essential. |
[Edit] ConIt is not constant arguments that allows social development but music litriture and art. These key components of a flourishing society help social development a lot more than encouraging bickering amongst people that amounts to nothing. |
[Edit] [ ]Affirmative Points and Rebuts
[Edit] ProDebating represents democracy, freedom of speech and the voice of the people (vox populi). |
[Edit] ConDebating requires the adjudicator to fully understand the subject and both sides have to be of equal ability and have equal resources. If these requirements are not met than the debate cannot be considered fair as on side has an advantage. Therefore it is only in a very rare case that debating genuinely represents the voice of democracy and is essential for social development.

[Edit] [ ]Affirmative Points and Rebuts
[Edit] ProDebating can allow people to fully analyse a situation before attempting it. |
[Edit] ConYou learn from your mistakes is a well known saying. But if through the use of debating you decied not to act, how will you learn? If you never try something new, how will you learn? How will you develop socially? If debating is constantly used and no decisions are made it is impossible to develop socially. |

[Edit] Pro |
[Edit] ConSuch country's are extremely rare as they require a balanced parliamentary system with no one party or coalition holding the majority of seats in both lower and upper house. Most countries in this position however can also easily have the opposite effect than the affirmative described, causing indecision. |
[Edit] [ ]Affirmative Points and Rebuts
[Edit] ProDebating allows people to have a say in the way a country is run. |
[Edit] ConThose who are debating already have a predetermined view point. Even if they say they agree to the points the opponent presents they are most probably saying this to avoid looking stupid. When someone walks into a debate it is rare that their opinions change when they walk out. So if debating does not change peoples views how is it allowing them to control anything in the country if those who disagree remain stubborn and refuse to change viewpoints? |

[Edit] [ ]Universal Negative Rebut
[Edit] Universal RebutThe outcome of any debate depends upon the right question being asked, equally skilled people on each side of the argument, equal leverage and persuasive oratory skills skills, and a competent adjudicator. Society can be bogged down with endless debates and delay of important decisions.
