• Youth hostels offer the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, create new relationships. - Hostels attract especially young people, who mostly travel for the fun of traveling and are eager to meet, talk and create relationships with people from different countries, different cultures.

• Hostels may be insecure. - This is especially true when staying in dorms, i.e. rooms with many beds. One doesn't have the chance to know all the inhabitants very well during the evening. A missing wallet or digital camera are among the better outcomes of staying in one room overnight with people you actually don't know at all.
• Hostels offer only a basic standard of accommodation. - While this of course varies wildly from hostel to hostel, there are usually only shared facilities in hostels. Also, there is somewhat higher probability that one will encounter bedbugs, fleas and/or other vermin in a hostel than in a hotel.
