Does anyone care what you're doing right now? (i.e. is Twitter useful?)

Background and context

Twitter has become a modern phenomena. Yet, many question whether it has really added in significant value to humanity. Does it cut-down on deeper human communications, and more meaningful interactions?

Present: Does Twitter contribute or distract from the present?

Pro

  • Twitter fosters appreciation for what you are doing now. It is important to write about what you are doing at present, as it allows you to illuminate and appreciate the meaning of your present actions. Sometimes, when people plod along in life without writing or reflecting on their actions, this deeper meaning eludes them.
  • Sharing what you are doing now fosters appreciation for now. Sharing what you are doing at present creates a greater appreciation within yourself for the actions you are taking at this moment. It is certainly beneficial to an appreciation of the present to journal about your life. But, taking the next step and journaling publicly via twitter requires that one open their present actions to public scrutiny, which subsequently engenders greater personal care for the actions one is taking presently.
  • Twitter can be used to deepen your understanding of current issues. Various news sources, public affairs shows, academic institutions, debate clubs and intellectual publications use twitter to provide an easily scannable list of topics with links to supporting material.

Con

  • Twitter distracts from deeper interactions in the present. No, Twitter makes people think in terms of everyone but who they are with, including themselves. It takes away silence and dilutes our ability to "be present," both of which are essential for critical thinking to take shape and authentic relationships to form. Plus, it's like the Volkswagen commercial: "In life, there are drivers and there are passengers. Drivers wanted." I don't want to live in a world of following and being followed.
