Below is a general summary and guideline by Jeffrey Romanow for the teaching of Citizen Journalism as it was taught at the IDEA's 2007 Duino Insitute.

This course will explore a variety of reporting techniques in order to create an in-depth understanding of writing, photography, and video communication as a means to express engaging and globally relevant ideas and stories. Attendees will be trained in how to pitch a story idea, research it, construct it, prepare it, and finally, present it. The journalistic approach to creating a story will include presentations through words and images. Students will be trained in a variety of open source computer technology and recording and photography equipment and techniques. The stories expressed and produced through both the written and spoken word, as well as photographic images, will emphasize the analytic, investigative, and narrative skills, and include the all important ethics, necessary to produce an effective news story, photographic essay, a combination of both, or the more contemporary video aspects of story telling – primarily through the creation of Public Service Announcements. Students may also be given the opportunity to expression their “vision” for an idea/issue through a creative combination of words, photographs, and music.
