Resolved: That the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 will successfully mitigate economic slowdowns over the next year |
Background and Context of Debate:You will have to prove how the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 will or will not successfully mitigate economic slowdowns over the next year. The cases could incorporate previous tax rebates although you will have to prove how it is or is not within the context of the resolution. |
Is the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 affordable?
YesThe Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 helps consumers by allowing them to have more money. As a result, more money will be flowing through the US economy; thus, helping to advance the value of the US dollar. Obviously in this process, the US government will make profits in return for the money soent on the packages.
NoThe US government cannot attain trillions of dollars entirely by themselves. As a result, the US will be forced to borrow money from foreign investors. Therefore, the value of the US dollar would decrease even more.
Does the Stimulus Package provide enough money to mitigate economic slowdons over the next year?
YesThe amount offered for a single man or woman is $600. For one person, that is alot of money. It can be used to buy at least two months worth of food. If that $600 lasts two months for every grown individual, the flow of money will increase. Therefore, the stimulus package offers enough money to milden economic slowdowns for at least a year.
NoMoney can only do so much and last so long as evidenced by our falling economy. Also concurrent to this idea is the fact that $600 can only last about two months if the recipients decide to spend their money. Therefore, the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 does not offer enough money to help mitigate our economic slowdowns.
Will beneficiaries spend this money the way the government intended?
YesThe majority of the stimulus checks are going to the middle and poor class. With our economy going bad, these people are struggling and would use all of the resources that they can lay their hands on.
NoThe government expects the stimulus recipients to spend their checks on consumer goods. But, the majority of the people recieving the checks are going to use the money to pay of debt or something of the sort.
